Abstract
The aim of this paper is to revise Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s religious carols and to show the use that the nun gives to popular songs in this kind of compositions. Since the first examples of “ a lo divino contrafacta”, the presence of the popular lyric in the religious poetry was explicit, but until now, it doesn’t exist a single work that analyze the presence of the popular element in Sor Juana’s work. Nevertheless, the popular songs corpus that can be found in Sor Juana’s carols is diverse. It’s important to emphasize that these carols were written in New Spain by a criollo and that Sor Juana’s compositions set a boundary into the New Spain carol’s production
