Abstract
This paper analyzes the narrative procedures of España by Manuel Vilas around the construction of national identity. This is established as a ‘pre-significant’ core to which texts try to refer through a series of allegorical operations. These operations pose a question on the status of the text and on the current configuration of the literary system. This raises the problem of the place of literature in contemporary culture, crossed by recent digital technological transformations. Moving away from the lines that marked the literature of Spanish Transition and the one linked to the recovery of ‘memoria histórica’, España opens to a conception of literary invention as fictional mutation
